1960 New York Yankees Program and Scorecard Notes

SPRING IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER ... THE 1960 NEW YORK YANKEES
Mickey Mantle-Elston Howard-Casey Stengel-Bobby Richardson-Yogi Berra
"SEE BASEBALL AT ITS VERY BEST ... as the New York Yankees return to Yankee Stadium on Friday afternoon, April 22, when they open the season with the Baltimore Orioles. Casey Stengel and his team are determined to bring the World Championship back to New York, so it should be an exciting year.
And, for the best selection of seats for all the BIG dates- 21 nights- 12 Sundays- two holidays- and the opener- inquire now about the COMBINATION TICKET PLAN. This plan assures you the same choice of seats for all the BIG games, plus the opportunity to obtain tickets for the 1960 All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium and the World Series if it should be in New York next fall.
Orders are being accepted now also for any individual games of your choice. Consult the schedule and then check with the Yankee ticket office here at the Stadium today."

-1959 New York Giants Official Program (Yankee Stadium, December 6)

WELCOME TO YANKEE STADIUM
"You are attending a baseball game at the most famous sports stadium in America ... Yankee Stadium, the Home of Champions. The greatest players in the long history of our national sport have performed here. Yankee teams have won 18 World Championships since moving to this park, far and away the top record in the game.
All told more than 48,000,000 fans have attended American League baseball, World Series, college and professional football, championship fights, other sports attractions, religious and fraternal functions in this renowned stadium.
In this year of 1960 ... at the start of a new decade ... the New York Yankees are seeking to regain the American League pennant, having won nine in the previous eleven years. To accomplish this comeback, the Bombers will have to win from their top adversaries ... and at home."

-1960 New York Yankees Official Program and Scorecard

NEW YANKEES
"Manager Casey Stengel handed bats to each of four new Yankees when they reported to the club at spring training: outfielder Roger Maris, first baseman Kent Hadley, infielder Joe DeMaestri (all three were acquired in the big mid-winter deal) and outfielder-pinch hitter Elmer Valo. Maris is expected to be an outfield regular and an added punch in the lineup while the others will give the Yankees added bench strength."

YANKEE OUTFIELD
"The Yankee outfield of 1960 posed for the photographers during spring training: Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle and Hector Lopez who are expecting to appear in the outfield in that order, with Maris trying the Stadium 'sun' field and Lopez shifting to right with Mickey back in his accustomed spot in center. The three hit a total of 69 homers last season ... and hope to up this total in 1960. And the average age of this slugging trio is just 26 2/3 years."

YANKS-RED SOX IN PREVIEW
"Those old arch-rivals, the Yankees and Boston Red Sox, will meet in an unprecedented pre-season weekend series at Yankee Stadium on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, April 16 and 17. The exhibition games on both afternoons will start at 2:00 P.M. Mail orders are being accepted now for these games at the Yankee ticket office. Regular prices will prevail."

-Yank (official publication of the New York Yankees), Vol 15, No. 1, March 1960

BIG OPENING WEEKEND WITH ORIOLES SET FOR APRIL 22-24
"New faces ... new hopes ... a new season in a new decade greet Yankee fans as the club prepares for the 1960 American League pennant race. Though the 1950s ended on a sad note with a third place finish, manager Casey Stengel is looking for added pitching strength from the minors, plus more power from newcomer Roger Maris and better seasons from Mickey Mantle, Bill Skowron, Andy Carey and Gil McDougald to move the Yanks back into title contention.
Stengel is currently giving a long look at the finest crop of young hurlers he's had at the St. Petersburg training base in years. From 23 pitchers in camp, Casey feels confident that he can come up with 10 or 11 who will give the Yankees championship grade hurling.
'I ought to have a pretty good idea by the time we get back to Yankee Stadium to open our home season,' said the veteran Yankee skipper. For the first time in five years and only the second time in a decade, the Yankees will not be raising a championship flag on Opening Day.
But a big, gala Opening Day program is being planned to usher in one of the club's most important seasons in years. With Paul Richards' revamped and threatening Orioles as the attraction on opening weekend, the new Yankees should have a real test for the home fans. The Orioles meet the Yankees on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, April 22nd, 23rd and 24th.
Only two other games are on the April home schedule. Boston plays a single afternoon game at the Stadium on Tuesday, the 26th, and Washington on a Wednesday afternoon, the 27th."

-Yank (official publication of the New York Yankees), Vol 15, No. 1, March 1960

DODGERS RETURN TO PLAY YANKS IN SANDLOT BENEFIT
"An old rivalry will be resumed at Yankee Stadium on Monday night, June 27, when the present World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers return to play the New York Yankees in a charity exhibition game.
This will be the second game of the home and home series. Last season the Yankees helped the Dodgers attract a record throng of 93,103 in a game played to honor Roy Campanella at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The Yanks won that one by a 6-2 score.
This year's game will mark the Dodgers' first appearance in New York since moving to the West Coast. The Yankees' share of the receipts once again will be turned over to the promotion and development of sandlot baseball in the Greater New York area.
A special feature of the Yankee Stadium program will be the presentation of the Babe Ruth Award to Larry Sherry, Dodger relief star who won the honor with his spectacular performances in the 1959 World Series. Regular ticket prices will prevail and seats can be ordered now."

-Yank (official publication of the New York Yankees), Vol 15, No. 1, March 1960

"This 1960 Yankee Yearbook is dedicated to the future! In years gone by this annual publication has paid just tribute to the great Yankees who have made Yankee Stadium the traditional Home of Champions.
The outstanding athletes who have performed here have helped the Yankees win 24 American League pennants and 18 World Championships. No other team in any sport has compiled so impressive a record. Indeed the Yankees of today are proud to be a part of the great Yankee heritage.
Now as we turn the corner into a new decade, the Yankees of 1960 are determined to bring baseball fans additional championships ... the best in baseball and baseball entertainment in America's finest Stadium ... Yankee Stadium ... the Home of Champions."

-The New York Yankees Official 1960 Yearbook

YANKEES HOST FIRST ALL-STAR GAME IN 21 YEARS
"This is 'All-Star' year in New York. On Wednesday afternoon, July 13 the Yankees will host the 28th All-Star Game and only the second such classic in Yankee Stadium history.
Back in 1939 as a feature of the New York World's Fair, the Yankees played host to the greatest stars of the American and National Leagues. On that occasion, more than 62,000 fans saw the American League stars top the Nationals by a score of 3-1.
In that memorable first All-Star Game at the Stadium, the Yankees were honored by the selection of nine players and the manager: Joe McCarthy, Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Frank Crosetti, Lefty Gomez, Joe Gordon, Red Rolfe, Red Ruffing, Johnny Murphy and George Selkirk. McCarthy, DiMaggio and Dickey were honored with Hall of Fame selection.
The July 13 game here will produce new stars from both leagues in a highlight event of the mid-summer baseball season. Game details will be announced after arrangements are approved by the Commissioner's office."

-1960 New York Yankees Official Program and Scorecard

GALA OLD TIMERS' DAY - SATURDAY AUGUST 13
"The outstanding attraction of the 1960 season- OLD TIMERS' DAY- on Saturday afternoon, August 13, will feature both the American and National League All-Star teams of 1939.
A glittering array of talent will be on hand for this nostalgic event that annually wins the plaudits of fans from coast to coast. The  American League won the 1939 All-Star Game, the first to be played at Yankee Stadium. Because this was another All-Star season in New York, it was decided to invite all the great heroes from '39 back for the event.
It will be a full, exciting afternoon of baseball. Field ceremonies will get underway at 1:15 P.M. with the introduction of the old-time players and other dignitaries by Mel Allen, M.C. After the introductions, the stars will play a two-inning game and then the Yankees will take on the vastly improved Washington Senators, who have held the Yanks all even in competition to date.
Acceptances for Old Timers' Day were being received quickly at the Yankee offices and will be announced regularly in the daily newspapers and on TV and radio. There are too many names to list them all in this limited space. The managers will be Joe McCarthy for the Americans and Gabby Harnett for the Nationals, just as they were in the '39 classic. Both are in the Hall of Fame. Other Hall of Famers expected included Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenberg and American League president Joe Cronin.
It will be a great afternoon ... Saturday, August 13. Plan to be here!"

-1960 New York Yankees Official Program and Scorecard

THEIR POWER MAY TELL
"If the Yankees are to be successful in this hectic 1960 pennant scramble, the booming bats of Roger Maris, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle and Bill Skowron will tell the tale. All four were selected as starters for the recent All-Star Games.
Maris has led the major leagues most of the season in homers and RBIs. Berra had already reached the 310 mark in home run production as this was written (a record for catchers). Mantle passed the 300 homer mark (being the 18th man in big league history to reach that figure). Skowron's 12th homer of the season was the 100th of his career in what appears to be his best home run year in the majors. The four had a mid-August total of 93."

-1960 New York Yankees Official Program and Scorecard

WELCOME TO THE 25TH YANKEE WORLD SERIES ...
"A warm welcome to Yankee Stadium for the New York portion of the 1960 World Series. The Yankees are particularly happy to play host to this World Series, the 25th in the club's history and the 10th in the 12-year Yankee managerial career of Casey Stengel.
Many of the greatest stars in baseball history have played on the Yankee Stadium diamond. Some of the game's most memorable moments occurred during World Series games here in the Home of Champions.
Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and many more legendary heroes of baseball have thrilled millions of fans here at Yankee Stadium. Perhaps this Series, too, will produce new heroes, new thrills, and moments of greatness that will rank alongside other historic events in Yankee Stadium history."

-1960 World Series Official Souvenir Program

GAME INFORMATION
"In doubt about the game? Yankee game, weather and information bulletins will be announced on WWGM, at 1050 on the radio dial, at 12:30 P.M. before day games and at 5:55 P.M. before night contests."

-1960 New York Yankees Official Program and Scorecard

STADIUM PARKING FACILITIES
"The New York Yankees have been seeking additional parking space for the convenience of fans attending Stadium events. One existing lot has been purchased by the Yankees to assure efficient service and minimum parking rates. The effort to improve facilities will continue.
Yankee-operated parking lots as always assure fans of wide aisles between rows, easy access to and from parking lots at all times, and courteous treatment by the parking attendants- all part of a program for the convenience of Yankee fans.
All regular Yankee parking lots will be in operation again this year, providing excellent parking at a uniform price of $1.00 both at the Stadium and north and south of the Stadium. The lot at 164th Street and River Avenue is especially convenient for fans driving through the North Bronx, and the lot at 151st Street and River Avenue (opposite the Bronx County Jail) is particularly convenient for fans driving from Long Island, Manhattan and the South Bronx.
Once again, as an added convenience for fans driving to Yankee Stadium, the Polo Grounds parking lot will be open every day this season from 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M., and until after the close of any night event at Yankee Stadium."
