1962 Profile: Jack Reed

"This is Jack Reed's second season as a Yankee. Though he rarely starts a ball game, manager Ralph Houk considers this speedy Mississippian a valuable member of the club. He is an excellent outfielder and a good baserunner, and he has been used effectively as a frequent late-inning defensive outfielder and pinch runner. A graduate of Ole Miss, Jack was an all-around athlete in college. His value as a utility man with the Yankees has been displayed often since the start of last season."

"This was Jack Reed's second season as a Yankee outfield replacement. A fine defensive performer and good base runner, the Ole Miss graduate played an important role this summer, particularly during Mickey Mantle's long absence from action. He was the hero of the 22-inning win at Detroit, belting a two-run homer."
