"While most of this 1961 Yankee Yearbook is devoted to the players on the current club ... the names that are household words across the country ... no phase of Yankee life is more important to the management than the Farm Department. For it is here that the Yankees of the future will be developed.
The Yankees continue today, as in the past, concentrating their efforts on developing their own talent. Of the regulars on the 1961 Yankees, Bill Skowron, Bobby  Richardson, Tony Kubek, Clete Boyer, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Elston Howard, John Blanchard, Deron Johnson, Whitey Ford, Ralph Terry, Bill Stafford and Jim Coates were developed on Yankee farms. Terry and Boyer were acquired in trades, but their basic development was accomplished in the Yankee farm system. Hector Lopez, Roger Maris, Art Ditmar, Ryne Duren and Bob Turley were acquired from other clubs in trades for Yankee-developed talent.
So, if a young prospect has major league potential, he's certain to develop that potential with the Yankee organization ... for Yankee players and Yankee-developed players are in demand throughout the majors.
The Yankees maintain a modern, streamlined farm system, including seven minor league clubs. In this farm system is one club in each classification of baseball from Class C all the way up to Class AAA. In the lowest Class, D, the Yanks maintain two teams. Thus the Yankees concentrate on quality instead of quantity.
When the Yankees offer a boy a contract, it's because their experienced scouts feel that the boy is a major league prospect. And once he's signed, he comes under the scrutiny of the man who signed him as well as receiving specialized instruction from qualified minor league managers and Yankee scouts and minor league coaches ... fine teachers like Steve Souchock and Ben Tincup who constantly travel the minors helping in the development program.
While the Yankees have won an incredible 25 American League pennants and 18 World Championships, the Yankees have been continually rebuilding while winning. When Manager Ralph Houk first reached the parent Yankees in 1947, he joined the first of 11 pennant winners produced under the Co-Ownership of Dan Topping and Del Webb. Of the players on that first club, only the redoubtable Yogi Berra remains. In fact, of the clubs that won five straight pennants and World Series (1949-53), only three players remain- Mantle, Ford and Berra.
The Yankees are the most highly publicized of all sports teams. They are the models imitated by other clubs. The New York Yankees are proud of their heritage and look forward to producing more great players to carry on the Yankee tradition."

-The New York Yankees Official 1961 Yearbook

"A top faculty of coaches, managers, scouts and minor league instructors were on hand with Manager Ralph Houk at St. Petersburg, Florida, this spring. In addition to the varsity squad, many top farm prospects attended an Advance Training Program and received the best of instruction from the faculty. Top-grade instruction is available to all Yankee prospects, at the Yankee camp and at farm club training centers and throughout the season wherever Yankee farm prospects are playing. Though the Yankees often are active in the trading marts, the club continues a policy of developing its own players."

YANKEE AMATEURS
"Each summer, Yankee scout Arthur Dede directs a group of ambitious youngsters who play a full schedule of baseball as the 'Yankee Rookies.' Wearing Yankee Pinstripes and meeting various community, American Legion, all-star and other area clubs, the proceeds go to the local community charities. These greater New York amateurs learn teamwork, improve their game and, who knows, a few may become New York Yankees of the late 1960s."

-The New York Yankees Official 1961 Yearbook

"The Yankees, like their champion counterparts in the other league, won't come up with much new stuff. There is perennial rookie Deron Johnson, who can play third base or the outfield; the former All-American high school football player has just turned 23. A sparse outfield crew gives a left-handed swinger, Lee Thomas, a chance. Rollie Sheldon, 15-1 at Auburn, and Pedro Gonzalez, .327 at Binghamton, could surprise."

-Perry Smith (Producer, NBC-TV Major League Baseball), NBC Complete Baseball 1961
